It’s a bummer to think that the better tool won’t come about because no one will pay for it, despite what sounds like extreme utility improvements. Have you thought about turning this into an open source project instead? I feel like there are folks out there looking for portfolio projects while they’re in between jobs thanks to layoffs etc.

I’d certainly love the opportunity to contribute. I love to code but struggle to think of projects.

Unfortunately I don't have any control over the software tools NEPOOL selects--hell, I barely have procurement input in my own employer. And NEPOOL in my opinionated experience, are old, crotchety, and hostile to change.

lol fun times. I wonder what it costs them to maintain the current system?

I noticed that ERCOT finally exposed a REST API sometime in the past few years. Any insight into how their org, budgeting etc works vs NEPOOL?

The budget was apparently 1.1M for CY2024. For a rough comparison, the budget for new feature development in CY2025 apparently topped out around $50k.

I…don’t know how those numbers line up.

Which I guess is my distracted way of saying “ERCOT, from my very limited perspective, seemed to have a lot of inertia around their software, particularly their API offering. They did finally manage some forward motion, though. I wonder how that happened and who was involved.”

They even have a developer forum now encouraging the development of new third party applications, which seems pretty cool.

Unfortunately, I have next-to-no insight into ERCOT.

Fair!

I looked around a bit, it actually looks like NEPOOL does offer an API to the GIS. I feel like that opens the door to a scenario where folks can develop 3rd party UI’s and then sell those UI’s to the users (market participants?) instead of trying to get NEPOOL to buy it.

I bet there's a grant out there you could get. You should look into it more. Especially with all the data center hype going around.
